Septic systems serve nearly 25% of the U.S. population. Historically, on-site wastewater disposal has been a common solution, especially in rural areas where municipal sewer service is often unavailable. As a result, septic systems remain an essential and practical option. When properly maintained, these systems are generally reliable.
Aerobic systems are a more advanced type of on-site wastewater treatment. Unlike traditional (anaerobic) septic systems, aerobic systems introduce oxygen into the treatment process using an air pump or compressor. This added oxygen promotes the growth of aerobic bacteria, which break down waste more efficiently and produce a higher-quality effluent. Because of this enhanced treatment, aerobic systems are often used on smaller lots, in areas with poor soil conditions, or where environmental regulations are stricter. However, they require more maintenance, electricity, and periodic servicing to ensure proper operation.
