Is the Franklin 20XC1 the Right Pump for My Septic System?

The Franklin Electric 20XC1-05P4-2W115 is a 1/2 HP, 115V high-head submersible pump designed for filtered effluent, gray water, cistern, and other applications where significant pressure and maximum tank drawdown are required.

Franklin Electric 20XC1 High-Head Effluent Pump

The Franklin Electric 20XC1-05P4-2W115 is part of Franklin's C1 Series of bottom-suction submersible pumps. It is designed to provide dependable high-head performance in filtered effluent and gray water applications while allowing the liquid level in a tank to be drawn down farther than with many conventional submersible pump designs.

The 20XC1 uses a five-stage hydraulic assembly and is rated for approximately 20 GPM, with a maximum flow rate of approximately 25 GPM. Its high-head design produces up to approximately 170 feet of shutoff head, making it well suited for systems with long piping runs, elevation changes, or pressure distribution requirements.

The pump's bottom-suction design allows for maximum fluid drawdown and does not require a separate flow-induction sleeve. Its internal hydraulic components are designed to pass solids up to 1/8 inch without damaging the pump.

Stainless-steel construction is used throughout the pump's metal components for corrosion resistance, while engineered thermoplastic hydraulic components help provide quiet operation and dependable performance.

The "20 GPM" rating identifies the pump's nominal operating range and does not mean the pump will deliver exactly 20 GPM under every installation condition. Actual flow depends on total dynamic head, elevation, pipe size, pipe length, fittings, valves, filters, sprinkler or drip-system requirements, and other restrictions.

What Does "20X" Mean?

The 20XC1 is Franklin's higher-head version of the C1 20 GPM pump. The standard 20C1 uses a four-stage hydraulic assembly and has approximately 135 feet of shutoff head, while the 20XC1 uses five stages and provides approximately 170 feet of shutoff head. This makes the 20XC1 better suited for installations requiring additional pressure.

What is the difference between the 20C1 and 20XC1?

Both are 1/2 HP pumps in Franklin Electric's C1 Series. The standard 20C1 is a four-stage pump with approximately 135 feet of shutoff head. The 20XC1 adds a fifth hydraulic stage and increases maximum shutoff head to approximately 170 feet. The 20XC1 is intended for applications that require more pressure.

What is a bottom-suction septic pump?

A bottom-suction pump draws liquid from near the bottom of the pump assembly. This allows the tank to be pumped down to a lower liquid level than many mid-suction designs and is particularly useful in cisterns and pump tanks where maximum drawdown is desired.

Can this pump be used in a septic spray or pressure-distribution system?

It may be used in filtered-effluent pressure applications when its pump curve matches the required flow and total dynamic head of the system. Always verify the hydraulic requirements of the specific septic system before selecting a replacement pump.

Does the Franklin 20XC1 have a built-in check valve?

Yes. The C1 Series includes a built-in removable check valve for backflow prevention.

Can this pump handle solids?

Franklin Electric states that the C1 Series hydraulic components can pass solids up to approximately 1/8 inch. The pump is intended for filtered effluent and gray water applications and should not be used as a raw-sewage or large-solids handling pump.

Does 20 GPM mean the pump always produces 20 GPM?

No. Actual flow depends on the total dynamic head of the installation. Elevation, pipe diameter, pipe length, fittings, valves, filters, sprinkler heads, drip components, and other restrictions all affect pump performance. Pump selection should be based on the required operating point on the pump curve.

Can I replace another 1/2 HP pump with the 20XC1?

Possibly, but horsepower alone does not determine compatibility. Two 1/2 HP pumps can have significantly different flow and pressure curves. Verify voltage, required flow, total dynamic head, discharge connection, float controls, and septic-system requirements before substituting a pump.
